Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family of Ford, they were taken care of by her grandmother, mom as well as godparents. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford started acting in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford was then able to apply for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime, she had already made her TV debut on the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Apart from her regular theatre work, Tate joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy and humour, which she added to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining her attention.
